Amanni Smith grew up in Freeport, NY, and graduated from Queens College with her Bachelor’s Degree in English. After she graduated from Queens College in 2016, she pursued a career in social work, serving many New Yorkers from ages newborn to 50 years old. For most of her career in social work, she worked with youth in the foster care system and the judicial system. As their case worker, Amanni assessed their individual and family needs, reuniting or creating new families to foster a healthy life for the youth. In her spare time, she also volunteered as a youth leader at her church, where she taught dance and step to teenage girls. Amanni’s experience with youth in the foster care and judicial systems has given her a perspective on what life may be like for some students outside of school. She believes that the trauma that could be taking place in some of their lives will definitely affect their performance in school, so she is looking forward to creating strong support systems to heighten their chances for success.
