William Choi was born and raised in New Jersey. He graduated from Tenafly High School in 2011 and then from Montclair State University in 2015. As an undergraduate, William majored in Psychology and minored in English, in addition to earning a certification in Child Advocacy. In college, William pursued his passion for elementary education by taking courses required to apply to the Montclair Teacher Education program. Initially, he wanted to get his certification by completing the program, but that door closed and William sought alternative routes to becoming an educator. Months prior to his graduation, he was accepted by Match Community Day Charter Public School in Boston, MA, to work as a Corps Tutor. At Match Community Day School, William worked with elementary school students, ranging from 1st to 4th grade, on ELA and Mathematics, and also with Operations. Reflecting on this time spent in Boston, William considered what it meant to be an educator. For a long time, he had viewed elementary education as the core building foundation for children. However, he soon came to realize that secondary education is just as important. William became more interested in what it means to teach high school. After working with Blue Engine, William hopes to work in the high school setting as a teacher who can be a positive influence for his students.
