Sophie Oberstein, originally from Brooklyn, NY, graduated from Vassar College with an English major and a concentration in secondary education over 20 years ago. She has since used her teaching skills as a learning and development professional, most recently at NYU, where she designed and facilitated in-person and online workshops on topics such as customer service, communication and leadership. While Sophie enjoyed training adults in a work setting, she always dreamed of teaching teenagers in an underserved New York City high school. In recent years, she volunteered as a mentor to high school students and as a college essay coach. Sophie wants to be able to make a significant contribution to solving problems that matter to her, like how to level the educational playing field so that students, regardless of their circumstances, can achieve their potential. Blue Engine puts her in a place to do that. She is honored to be working for an organization devoted to addressing this solvable social problem, and to be working with a team of similarly motivated and exceptional peers. After her year with Blue Engine, Sophie hopes to continue teaching – and advocating for – high school students.
