Sarmad grew up in a neighborhood of Flushing, one of the most ethnically diverse places on the planet. After spending most of his childhood in the city, he moved to upstate New York, where his family currently resides and the place he calls home. He originally went to school at Binghamton University, majoring in Neuroscience. However, it was indirectly through this path that he discovered his passion for literature and philosophy and decided to add English with Global Concentration as a major. He quickly became enamored with the humanities and the way they posed alternative ways of thinking and imagining human society, and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 2015. He quickly developed a great appreciation for the teachers that introduced him to these different ideas, as well as the writers they taught, and decided that he, too, wanted to impact the way literature and philosophy are discussed and taught in education. He maintains that he wouldn’t be where he is if it were not for the guidance of his teachers and mentors, for which he is immensely grateful. In researching teaching opportunities, he came across Blue Engine and was drawn to its core values and goals. He is very much looking forward to his first year with Blue Engine.
