Norma Alcaide grew up in Park Slope, Brooklyn. She saw the struggle her parents went through to give their children a better future than they had before moving to America. Her parents always told her siblings and her to work and continue their education since they couldn’t, and that was what she did. Norma attended SUNY New Paltz and majored in English and minored in Deaf studies. Being first generation Mexican-American to graduate from college in her family was a huge accomplishment. Norma found her love for teaching children when she volunteered as a tutor at a non-profit organization in her community for Hispanic children who needed help in their studies since they weren’t getting any from their schools or at home. She connected with the children because she knew how difficult it was for parents to be involved in their children’s schoolwork when they don’t know the English language. She realized then she wanted to support and show them that they can “reach for the stars” and achieve great things.
