Nikki grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta, and was always torn between Public Health and Education as a career path. Eventually, she was able to reconcile the two with a major in Sociology at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. By taking classes focused on the social determinants of health, Nikki was able to see the large role education plays in our everyday health and life expectancy. Driven by this knowledge, she participated in various organizations such as Project Literacy Adult GED tutoring and El Centro Hispano after-school tutoring where she learned the value of personalized instruction for older and bilingual students. While studying abroad in Cape Town, South Africa, she further learned the importance of community support and social environment when it comes to educational attainment. The families that hosted her during this time encouraged her to take advantage of many opportunities to give back to the community. For that reason, Nikki is excited to join Blue Engine not only to determine if education is the right path for her, but also to foster community support for achievement in the classroom.
