Education: Psychology and Culture Studies, Minor in Human Services, Villanova University

Placement: The Laboratory School of Finance and Technology

Karla and her family immigrated to the United States when she was a baby and resettled in Yonkers, NY. Her childhood was a rich blend of American culture and Salvadoran heritage. With the support of her family and various educators and administrators, Karla’s experiences with schooling and education were enjoyable and empowering. Karla is an alumna of Villanova University, where she primarily studied Psychology, Cultural Studies, and Human Services. Her time there was formative and it awakened her passion for advocating for equality and anti-oppression. She co-founded a chapter of the Food Recovery Network at Villanova (an initiative that reduces food waste and hunger/food insecurity), participated in several Habitat for Humanity/service trips, and was a peer educator focused on health issues pertinent to college students. Karla is excited to join the Blue Engine team as a BETA because it is a powerful platform through which she can collaborate with youth to utilize education as a tool in combating structural injustice and institutional inequity.
