Born in Maryland and raised in central NJ, Joyce spent her high school years discovering her interests in studio art, biology and literary criticism. At Williams College, she not only developed her multidisciplinary interests, double-majoring in Comparative Literature and Biology, but also developed interests in interdisciplinary approaches, such as narrative theory, cultural and racial identity in the context of community health. On campus, Joyce joined various organizations and groups as she developed her own cultural/racial identity, promoting community solidarity and mentoring students through her involvement. In January 2013, Joyce participated in a homestay in Portland, ME, with a refugee family and volunteered with English Language Learners at the local high school. This experience in the classroom piqued her interest in education and youth development, ultimately fueling Joyce’s desire to join Blue Engine. She strongly believes in the power of the narrative and literature for identity development and social change, and is excited to be working with other BETAs this coming year. Joyce hopes to pursue her interest in narrative medicine and public health by attending medical school in the future. In her free time, she enjoys pursuing personal art projects, hanging out with friends and playing badminton.
