Alex was born and raised on Staten Island with his four older siblings to parents who had emigrated from Hong Kong. Although school was difficult for Alex, he went on to join the Virtual Enterprise program and Business Plan Presentation team at New Dorp High School. His team took the national title at the Business Plan Competition, giving Alex the confidence he needed to apply for college and leave Staten Island for the cold and windy North of The State University at Buffalo. Separated from his New York City identity, Alex found solstice in the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) to assist low-income first-generation students such as himself to adapt to the rigors of college life. At Buffalo, he enjoyed English Literature courses, where he learned to express himself through writing and taking part in discussions of graduate level seminars, and found himself a part of the Ronald E. McNair Program to assist students to attend graduate school. It was then that Alex knew he had to give back to the communities that had allowed him opportunities at EOP and the McNair program. Alex is excited to be a part of Blue Engine and contribute to communities in New York in, what he sees, as the most meaningful way.
